An opulent hall with a polished mirror floor. In the old days, numerous balls and dances were held in this splendid room. However, as he aged, the Baron began to prefer private parties in the Parlor over the grand formal receptions of his youth.
― Room Directory

The Ballroom is a room in Blue Prince, listed as Room 020 in the Room Directory. A grand and ornate hall with most of its space dedicated to reflective dance floor, it is unique among the rooms on its directory page for its effect which sets the player's gem count directly instead of providing resource items.

Points of interest

Items

The Ballroom does not usually contain random items. However, with very high luck, one or two of the following items may spawn on the small table on the side of the room:

Documents

The Ballroom has two documents:

  • Two music sheet pages numbered 6 and 7 can be found on the piano's music rack. These sheets are read together as a single document, and contain a poem in the lyrics.
  • A single picture can be found on the small table on the side of the room, depicting Simon Sinclair and Clara Epsen dancing during the Inneclipse Ball in 1952.

6

Under these stars, the dance is held
And to the floor we are compelled,
The gowns glide on and music swells
And at the end the clock strikes twelve,
What that means only time can tell

7

Two remain for one last dance,
And spin again around clock hands
And as they turn a second chance
To rise above the falling sands
The true time lost in past romance.

Effect

Whenever the player enters the Ballroom, their gem count is immediately set to 2. Entering the Ballroom with fewer than 2 gems is considered an increase, and plays the usual gem pickup sound; if more than 2 gems are held, the total is reduced with no sound effect. There is no effect when entering with exactly 2 gems.

Due to the Ballroom's effect, its 2 gem requirement is often more of a barrier to entry than a cost. If a Ballroom is drafted with exactly 2, the spent gems can be immediately recovered by entering it.

The effect only triggers on entry, meaning that gems spent drafting a special room from the Ballroom itself are only regained by leaving and then entering again. If used strategically, the Ballroom can supply a run with plenty of gems, provided the player has the steps necessary to go back and recharge. It is worth noting that some rooms require more than 2 gems to be drafted, and so relying solely only on the Ballroom for gems can be limiting.

Interactions

  • The Ballroom has an unusual, buggy interaction with the Freezer. The Ballroom appears to have no effect when it is entered while assets are frozen; however, afterwards the player's gems appear to be treated as 2 for the sake of spending gems for as long as they remain frozen. In other words, it is possible to draft any room which costs 2 even though assets are frozen, and even if the player does not have the required gems. Gem costs "paid" while assets are frozen do not cause the player to actually lose gems, allowing vast numbers of special floorplans to be drafted. The same is true for other drafting effects which cost 2 or less, e.g. the Study can be activated up to eight times at no cost even though only two books appear on the screen. The bugged interaction ends if accounts are thawed or starting the next day. If assets are left frozen overnight, the correct number of gems are still carried over rather than 2.
  • Having the Study drafted will allow a player to use the gems from the Ballroom as a source of redraws.
  • The Laundry Room allows for the benefits of the Ballroom to extend to keys as well.
  • The Ballroom cannot be drawn while drafting in the Library unless at least 2 are held.

Additional information

  • Entering the Ballroom will often change the current soundtrack to Her Ladyship’s Theme if it hasn't played already today.
  • The Ballroom can be seen on one of the monitors in Security. It can also be glimpsed on the monitors in the Security cinematic.
