― Room Directory

The Coat Check is a room in Blue Prince. It is listed as Room 038 in the Room Directory.

Items

The Coat Check does not usually contain physical items. However, with very high luck, it may contain any of the following:

Effect

An archived Coat Check containing a Watering Can

The Coat Check allows the player to check one held special item, removing it from their inventory and storing it within the Coat Check. Despite this room's categorization as a Tomorrow room, the checked item can be retrieved from the Coat Check at any point that it is on the estate, including on the same day. This allows for items to be carried across separate days, as long as the player can draft the Coat Check again. Only one item can be checked at a time and resource items such as ivory dice can't be checked.

The Coat Check menu is accessed by interacting with the service window, which also rings the bell. From here, there are two options:

Check item
This option brings up a menu with a list of all currently held inventory items along side a potential claim ticket. Claim tickets are used as visual representations of items held in the Coat Check and consist of a claim number, the inventory icon of the checked item, and a small but inconsequential note reading "not responsible for content of garments or articles left overnight.". The initial claim number is a random number between 101 and 104, and is randomly generated each time the Coat Check menu is accessed. Subsequent claim numbers are always 1-4 more than the previous claim numbers, and are randomly chosen similarly.
Choosing an inventory item from the menu checks it, removing it from the inventory. The potential claim ticket becomes locked in, and appears next to the retrieve item option.
If there is an item already checked, the menu cannot be accessed and the player will be prompted to retrieve their item first. The menu is also inaccessible if the player has no special items to check.
Retrieve item
This option shows the claim ticket of the checked item, if there is one. Interacting with the claim ticket adds it back to the player's inventory and clears the Coat Check item.
If no item is checked when choosing this option, a prompt appears saying this.

At the start of any day while an item is currently checked, that item is removed from the item pool. This means that checking common items which appear randomly, such as the Shovel, can make them impossible to find until the Coat Check is drafted again. The Coat Check is thus most useful for storing rare items which are less common or trickier to find than the Coat Check itself, e.g. Vault Keys.

While an item is checked, the Coat Check's floorplan icon will have the checked item's claim ticket attached to it when it is drawn during drafting, although the claim number always says 000. This ticket appears even under the obscuring effects of the Darkroom and Archives, allowing the floorplan to be easily identified. The ticket doesn't appear on the floorplan elsewhere, such as in the Room Directory.

Interactions

  • Items which do not use the item pool to spawn, i.e. items which can spawn even if they are already held or on the estate, will usually still spawn even if they are held in the Coat Check. This includes many items with special or particular spawning requirements, such as Wind-up Keys, allowing them to be obtained in multiples.
  • A Treasure Map stored in the Coat Check overnight does not change its marked position, but can be used again even if it has already been used to find treasure on a previous day.
    • West Path [Outer Room: Trading Post] If a Treasure Map is used this way and then traded away at the Trading Post, it can be reobtained in the same day and may point to a different room, allowing treasure to be found twice in one day.
  • If a contraption is checked at the start of a day, it will remove some of its component items from the item pool to prevent multiple items with similar functionality from being obtained on the same day. The items removed differ from contraption to contraption.

Spoilers Within

This section contains spoilers for all contraptions.

Components not listed above can still be obtained while their corresponding contraption is checked. For instance, the Broken Lever and Battery Pack can still be found while either the Power Hammer or Jack Hammer is checked, meaning that one contraption can be retrieved and the other assembled so that both may be held and used at once.

Additional information

  • Checking any item for the first time on a save profile adds the name of the item to the Mount Holly Scrapbook, found upstairs in the Library, under the heading "MY FIRST CLAIM TICKET". The claim number is always shown as 008 rather than whatever the actual claim number was.
