The Freezer is a room in Blue Prince. Listed as Room 040 in the Room Directory, it is a Dead End which enables the player to carry over currency to the next day.
The Freezer is usually removed from the draft pool at the start of the day if it was drafted yesterday, preventing its effect from applying two days in a row. See its #Tomorrow effect for more information.
The Freezer contains several frozen items, but none which can be collected. One frozen key and two frozen gems can be found on shelves, and the cooler at the back can be opened to find another frozen item and a frozen document, which cannot be inspected. The Freezer's contents are not affected by luck in any way.
While in the Freezer, a unique temperature gauge appears on the bottom right of the screen in the form of a thermometer, stating that the current temperature in the Freezer is -16 °C.
Shortly after drafting the Freezer, the player's accounts - their gold and gem totals - become frozen for the rest of the day, represented by the resource counters being encased in ice in the top right of the screen. If either of those counters are not yet visible due to not finding any of the corresponding resource yet today, drafting the Freezer causes them to display as 0.
While a resource is frozen, it cannot be increased or decreased by any means. Physical resource items, i.e. piles of coins, gems, and packets of gold such as daily allowance can all still be picked up, but are not added to the resource totals. Coins cannot be spent in Shops, rendering most of them useless, and gems cannot be spent while drafting, making it entirely impossible to draft special floorplans without some way to bypass gem costs. Other effects which modify coin and gem totals, such as those of the Chapel and the Ballroom, do not affect those totals. Keys, dice and other resources are unaffected.
While accounts are frozen, the confirmation message before calling it a day clarifies that everything will be reset "(With the exception of your frozen assets)". Calling it a day with frozen accounts causes those totals to carry over to the next day. Strictly speaking, the player's resources are still reset at the end of the day; the Freezer's tomorrow effect just returns coins and keys equal to the amount that were held at the end of the day yesterday. This has interactions with certain effects such as that of the Coin Purse.
If the Freezer's Tomorrow effect has taken place today by carrying over gems and coins today, it is removed from the draft pool for the day, preventing its effect from being used two days in a row. This happens even if accounts were frozen at 0
and 0
.
The Furnace has two interactions with the Freezer. Standing some way into the Furnace for a second or so will thaw frozen accounts, removing the effect and allowing coins and gems to be acquired and spent again. Calling it a day while accounts are thawed will not apply the Freezer's tomorrow effect, nor will it remove the Freezer from the draft pool tomorrow. Entering the Freezer with thawed accounts will refreeze them.
While the Furnace is on the estate, entering the Freezer will cause the temperature to slowly rise. Contrary to popular belief, the Furnace and Freezer do not need to be close in rank for this interaction to occur, although closer proximity does cause the Freezer to warm up faster. The heat increase does not begin until the Freezer is entered; it does not matter whether accounts are frozen at that point, and nothing can stop the temperature from rising once it has started.
As the Freezer warms up, the ice around the room gradually starts to melt. At around 5.5 °C, a large amount of the ice suddenly vanishes and a large sheet of ice on the left wall begins to melt, revealing a hidden chamber. Once the Freezer reaches around 10 °C, re-entering the Freezer will no longer refreeze thawed accounts. The temperature gauge will no longer display if accounts are thawed.
At around 14.5 °C, most frozen items in the Freezer fully thaw:
The temperature rise eventually halts at 17 °C. The contents of Herbert Sinclair's personal freezer, located in the back of the room, are not affected by ambient temperature changes and never thaw this way. Changes to the Freezer's temperature and contents are not permanent, and the whole room resets to its default state the next time it is drafted.
Thaw timing and calculation
The exact rate of warming and thawing depends solely on the physical distance between the Freezer and the Furnace.
If they are any further apart, the thaw time is significantly longer. For instance, a Freezer three rooms away from a Furnace on the same rank takes around 146 seconds to fully thaw, or well over 2 minutes.
There is a linear relationship between distance and thaw time. Given any Freezer and Furnace which are x rooms apart in the west/east direction and y rooms apart in the north/south direction, the time to thaw can be calculated as follows:
d by calculating d = √(x² + y²).40d - 20 seconds. This corresponds to the first four examples above.60d - 34 seconds.For instance, on opposite corners of the house, x = 4 and y = 8, which leads to d ≈ 8.9 and a time to thaw of approximately 503 seconds, or 8 minutes and 23 seconds.
The large sheet of ice on the left wall can be demolished by the Power Hammer, revealing a hidden chamber.
Unlike other objects which can be destroyed by the Power Hammer, this act of destruction is not permanent and the doorway will be refrozen the next time the Freezer is drafted. No other frozen objects in the Freezer can be broken open by the Power Hammer.
With an ignition tool, it is possible to apply direct heat to the Freezer's points of interest, thawing them. This allows the key and the pink and yellow gems to be collected, and can even instantly melt the ice wall on the left side of the room, providing access to the hidden chamber.
Unlike ambient heat, direct flame can also be applied to the contents of Sinclair's personal freezer. Doing so reveals a Prism Key which may be collected and a letter from Herbert Sinclair himself, addressed directly to Simon and labelled "thaw only in the event of my death". The letter tells Simon of important secrets too incriminating for the freezer, explicitly stating that each of the eight safes contains a red letter, and that there is a message hidden in the paired artwork hung up around the house that ties in to the codes of the safes.
The frozen Prism Key always appears in the cooler, regardless of whether it is available to spawn; however, if it is not available to spawn when thawed, it is instantly replaced by a Silver Key instead. If neither the Prism Key nor the Silver Key are available, it is replaced by another basic key. Frozen Prism Keys do not prevent Prism Keys spawning elsewhere, but thawed Prism Keys and Silver Keys do.
