Gems
Gems are a resource in Blue Prince. They are most frequently used to pay for Special Floorplans, though other effects such as the Study may allow gems to be spent in other ways. They are almost universally referred to in-game using the icon and are the associated resource of Green Rooms.
As a resource item, gems come in six color varieties - blue, yellow, pink, cyan, green and red - though the differences are purely cosmetic and are lost once the gems are collected. Gems do not show a name card or description when picked up, nor are they added to the inventory. Instead, they float up to the top of the screen where they are added to the gem count without interrupting play. This count is only visible once one or more gems have been obtained today, though it will still appear if the number of gems drops back down to 0 within the same day. The number of held gems is reset to 0 at the start of each new day.

Usage
The primary use of gems is as a currency used to purchase certain floorplans. Every floorplan has an associated gem cost of zero or more gems; floorplans with a nonzero gem cost are called special floorplans, whereas floorplans with no gem cost are considered to be "free" floorplans.
When drawing floorplans while drafting, the floorplans in the second and/or third slots may be special floorplans. Gem costs are shown below special floorplans using an equivalent number of symbols. It is usually impossible for first slot to be a special floorplan; in the rare event that it is, such as due to drafting from a restricted draft pool via the Secret Passage, then the cost of that floorplan is bypassed.
Attempting to draft a special floorplan with fewer gems than are required will block the action and cause both the gem requirement and gem count to flash red. Otherwise, the special floorplan is drafted and a number of gems are deducted equal to the gem cost.
Certain effects provide other uses for gems:
- The Study adds a drafting action that redraws floorplans at a cost of 1 per use. This action can be used no more than 8 times per draft.
- [Outer Room: Shrine] The Blessing of the Dancer adds a drafting action that rotates floorplans at a cost of 1 per use. There is no limit to when and how often this action can be used other than its gem cost.
Sometimes, the number of gems held is important even without them being spent:
- When using a Stopwatch, rooms do not cost gems to draft, but having the gems is still required to draft them.
- [Puzzle Spoiler: Aries Court Puzzle] The puzzle in The Precipice/Unknown requires having 0 as one of its requirements.
- [Game Mode Spoiler: Dare Mode] One dare requires ending the day with at least 1 gem. Another dare requires ending the day with 0 coins, gems, and keys.
- [Datamined Information] When more gems are held, the odds of drawing special floorplans is higher than with fewer gems.
Gems can be lost in a way that isn't considered spending them (and thus can be done even at 0):
- Entering the Ballroom immediately sets the gem count to 2.
- The Laundry Room allows gems to be exchanged for other resources.
- [Outer Room: Shrine] When cursed, drafting a Green Room or Red Room removes 1.
Interactions
Gem cost interactions
- The Terrace reduces the gem cost of all Green Rooms to zero.
- [Upgrade Spoiler: Spare Room] The Spare Terrace upgrade mimicks the effect of the Terrace.
- The Emerald Bracelet completely eliminates all gem costs from drafting while held, removing the need for gems or allowing them to be used for other purposes.
- [Outer Room: Hovel] The Hovel modifies all gem costs, replacing with them with step costs at a 3 to 1 rate.
- [Secret Shop Item: The Axe] The Axe can be used to permanently remove any floorplan's gem cost, if it has one.
Other gem interactions
- The Freezer prevents any gems from being collected, spent, or lost. Any effects that have a gem cost cannot be used while gems are frozen.
- For sixty seconds after collecting a Stopwatch, gems are not deducted when drafting a special floorplan. Drafting a floorplan while holding fewer gems than required is still not allowed.
- There is a particular experimental trigger which is activated by spending at least two gems to draft a room.
- [Major Constellation: Spiral of Stars] After 78 words have been added to the Spiral of Stars, it prevents gaining any more gems for the rest of the day.
