Lock Pick Kit
The Lock Pick Kit, Lockpick Kit or just the Lockpick is a special item in Blue Prince. It may be used while interacting with a locked door, providing a chance to unlock the door without spending a key.
How to obtain
This item can be found in the following locations.
- [Red Room Spoiler: Darkroom]
- [Found Floorplan: Closed Exhibit]
With unusually high luck, this item can also be found in the following rooms.
This item can be purchased from the following shops.
- Locksmith — 10
This item can also be obtained from the following sources.
- Trunks
- Packages from the Mail Room
- [Garage Spoiler] The trunk of the car in the Garage, after the Upgrade Disk has already been used
- [Upgrade Spoiler: Mail Room] Freight from the Mail Room
- [Satellite Dish Spoiler] The "gain 1 random item" experimental effect
A Lock Pick Kit can be guaranteed to spawn in the following ways.
[Upgrade Spoiler: Cloister] Drafting the Bedroom from the Cloister of Mila will always cause it to contain a Lock Pick Kit, if it has not spawned already and Repellent has.
- [Upgrade Spoiler: Spare Room] The same is true of the Spare Bedroom and all of its upgrades.
Usage
If a Lock Pick Kit is owned, when a locked door is interacted with, a prompt appears to use the item. When used, there is a chance that the door will immediately unlock, and a chance that it fails with the message "You don't seem able to pick this door's lock". If this occurs, attempting to use the Lock Pick Kit on that door again still does not open the door, displaying the message "This door's lock still seems too difficult to pick".
This item cannot be used on all doors; only doors that require a regular key work. Security doors cannot be lockpicked, and nor can the Locker Room's lockers or trunks, despite them being unlocked by regular keys.
Spoilers Within
This section contains spoilers for Satellite Dish.
Raising the Satellite Dish and downloading the data packet adds an additional batch of experimental triggers and effects, including an effect which raises lockpicking skill. Lockpicking skill increases the odds of picking locks succeeding, although even at very high levels of lockpicking skill it is still possible to fail.
Beyond the Estate
This section contains datamined information about exact odds. It may contain spoilers for various stages of the game.
The first three lockpicks in a day have a 54/101, 35/101, and 30/101 chance to succeed, respectively. (The chance goes down after a successful lockpick.)
After the first three successful lockpicks, remaining lockpicks have a 19/101 chance of success.
Lockpicking skill increases the numerator of these random chances:
- At 0-20 lockpicking skill, each point adds 2/3 to the numerator, rounded up. (The denominator is still 101.)
- At 21-80 lockpicking skill, 15 is added, then each point above 20 adds 1/3 to the numerator, rounded up.
- Note that there is a slight jump in odds from 20 to 21 lockpicking skill.
- At 80+ lockpicking skill, 35 is added, then each point above 80 adds 1/5 to the numerator, rounded up.
The odds of success are capped at 98/101; this is reached at 296 lockpicking skill (assuming at least three successful lockpicks already).
There is also a pity system. A counter starts at 0; failing to pick a lock adds 1, succeeding subtracts 1.
- If the counter is 3, the attempt automatically succeeds, and the counter is set to -1.
- This makes the actual rate of opening doors significantly higher than 19/101, as at least one in five doors will automatically succeed regardless of the odds.
- If lockpicking skill is 20 or less, and the counter is -2, the attempt automatically fails, and the counter is set to 1.
- When activating the Lock Pick Kit on a (non-Vestibule) door where an attempt has already been made to pick the door previously, if either of the above cases would activate, the counter is set to 0 (and nothing else happens).
Other uses
Spoilers Within
This section contains spoilers for the Workshop.
The Lock Pick Kit can be used as a component in one contraption in the Workshop:
- Lock Pick Kit + Metal Detector = Pick Sound Amplifier
The Pick Sound Amplifier is a direct upgrade to the Lock Pick Kit, with greater chances of successfully picking locks. This contraption will prevent the Lock Pick Kit from being obtainable on subsequent days if it is carried through by the Moon Pendant or stored in Coat Check.
Interactions
[Studio Addition: Vestibule] When used in the Vestibule, the doors can be repeatedly picked for a different result instead of only being able to try to pick it once, allowing spamming the doors until they open.
Additional information
- The Lock Pick Kit is mentioned on page 9 of Drafting Strategy: Architectural Digest Vol. 1 as an example of a Hallway synergy.
