Usage
The Metal Detector has two separate effects:
- Resource generation
- When drafting any room while holding the Metal Detector, there is a chance for it to contain an addition basic key or pile of coins. Coins are more common than keys and are mostly piles of just 1, but may be more. The number of coins spawned and the position of keys and coins within the room depend on the room itself. Items spawned by the Metal Detector are distinct from the usual items that can be found in those rooms, often found lying on the floor in awkward locations rather than on tables or shelves, and their spawn chances do not depend on luck. The Metal Detector cannot retroactively add additional items to rooms that have already been drafted.
- Metal detection
- While near certain detectable items, an image of the Metal Detector appears in the top right corner of the screen under basic resources which flashes and beeps periodically. The frequency of the beeps indicate how close the nearest detectable item is, and can be used to locate those items within a room.
- All coins and keys are detectable, not just those created by the Metal Detector. Almost all special keys are detectable, as are most metallic tools such as the Shovel, Sledge Hammer, Broken Lever, Battery Pack, Magnifying Glass, Compass and Lock Pick Kit.
- Some items which are not detectable include Wind-up Keys, the Keycard, Gear Wrench, Watering Can, Coin Purse and Upgrade Disk. Other metal objects, such as trunks and metal doors or components that cannot be picked up, are never detected.
- Certain items can be detected from neighbouring rooms through the walls when they are close enough. It is even possible to detect certain items outside, through the walls of the house.
If you've found a new clue, you know what to do.
Can the Metal Detector spawn coins / keys in all draftable rooms?
Which items, exactly, can be detected by the Metal Detector?
- Key spawned by the Metal Detector in the Hallway
- A pile of two coins spawned by the Metal Detector behind a bin in the Commissary
- Two coins, uniquely separate, spawned by the Metal Detector in the Bunk Room
Spoilers Within
This section contains spoilers for the Workshop.
The Metal Detector can be used as a component in three different contraptions in the Workshop:
- Metal Detector + Shovel = Detector Shovel
- Metal Detector + Magnifying Glass = Burning Glass
- Metal Detector + Lock Pick Kit = Pick Sound Amplifier
The Detector Shovel is the only contraption that inherits the Metal Detector's functionality, while also having an improved version of the Shovel's effect. The Burning Glass, on the other hand, has a completely different effect to either of its components. However, both of these contraptions will prevent the Metal Detector from being obtainable on subsequent days if they are carried through by the Moon Pendant or stored in Coat Check.
The Pick Sound Amplifier acts solely as an upgraded Lock Pick Kit, and never prevents the Metal Detector from being obtained when carried through to later days.
Interactions
- The Metal Detector can detect coins and keys found in the prize chambers of the Great Hall, making it easier to find and unlock the correct doors.
- [Contraption Spoiler: Powered Electromagnet] The Powered Electromagnet seems to disable the Metal Detector's detection effect while held, not just for coins and keys but for all detectable items. The effect which spawns additional coins and keys still seems to function as expected.
- [Outer Room: Shrine] The Metal Detector cannot detect coins that have been left in the Shrine offering bowl. It can detect certain dishes that are added to the Dining Room by the Blessing of the Chef; specifically, it can detect the coins in Golden Sunrise Soup and the key in Key Lime Pie, even though they are not actual items and cannot be picked up.
