This cozy lounge furnished with couches and armchairs serves as the perfect social setting for receptions and after parties. Consequently this was one of the most popular rooms for entertaining and the late H.S. Sinclair was known to supply a myriad of parlor games to encourage his guests to think and conversate.
― Room Directory

The Parlor is a room in Blue Prince. It is listed as Room 005 in the Room Directory.

Points of interest

Items

The Parlor always contains a Wind-up Key on a desk in the corner of the room. This item can be exchanged for 2 if used to open the correct box; see the puzzle below for more information.

  • Unlike most special items, the Wind-up Key spawns even if the player already has one in their inventory, allowing multiple copies to be obtained.

Additionally, the Parlor has a chance to contain one of the following items, either on the desk or on one of the small round tables by the chairs:

Documents

Also on the desk is a letter, presumably from one of Herbert Sinclair's guests. The second page of the letter lays out the rules that are used in the puzzle.

The Parlor's iconic boxes

The Parlor's main feature is its three locked boxes, all identical except for their colors and the statements written on each of them. The boxes always appear in the order blue, white, and black, from left to right.

The rules of the game are as stated in the letter:

Rule 1: There will always be at least one box which displays only true statements.

Rule 2: There will always be at least one box which displays only false statements.

Rule 3: Only one box has a prize within. The other 2 are always empty.

A Wind-up Key can be used to open one of the boxes. Once used, the key will remain in the box and cannot be retrieved. Only one box contains a "prize" of two gems and the other two are empty. The color of the gems depends on the box they are found in:

  • Blue boxes contain blue gems.
  • White boxes contain yellow gems.
  • Black boxes contain pink gems.

Since only one Wind-up Key is supplied, the statements on the boxes must be solved logically using the rules to determine which box contains the gems. It is always possible to determine which box contains the gems this way, though the difficulty of this task generally increases over time as more mechanics are added.

Edit this section at Parlor/Upgrades.

The Parlor is one of the floorplans which may be randomly selected when using an Upgrade Disk at a computer terminal.

There are three possible upgrades:

Floorplan Effect Description
ParlorGemsUpgradeIcon.png 3 Prize No change
ParlorKeysUpgradeIcon.png 2 Wind-up Keys No change
ParlorFuneralUpgradeIcon.png prize is equal to RED ROOMS in your house.

If you open an empty box in FUNERAL PARLOR, lose 30.
This solemn room exudes an atmosphere of reflection, logic and measured mourning. A dignified parlor game has been strategically placed a short distance from the casket, providing the bereaved with a gentle distraction. A fitting tribute, we think, to the deceased's fondness for puzzles.

The first two upgrades are mechanically simple and do not alter the room itself significantly. The first upgrade increases the prize gems from 2 to 3, whereas the second upgrade causes two Wind-up Keys to spawn instead of one, allowing for one mistake.

  • One particular Parlor Game (#5 in the List of Parlor Games) has a box that says "THERE IS A SECOND WIND-UP KEY IN THIS ROOM." Ordinarily this statement is trivially false; in the upgraded Parlor with two Wind-up Keys, this box is changed to "THERE IS A THIRD WIND-UP KEY IN THIS ROOM" to preserve its truth value.

Funeral Parlor

The Red side of the Funeral Parlor

The Funeral Parlor has significant differences from the other versions of the Parlor:

It becomes a Red Room and is no longer a Blueprint, causing it to gain the following interactions:

  • Upgrade Disk [Upgrade Spoiler: Closet] Drafting the Empty Closet from Funeral Parlor will cause it to contain four items instead of none.
  • West Path [Outer Room: Shrine] After drafting Funeral Parlor with Blessing of the General active, if there are Red Rooms in at least five different ranks, the player immediately gains 5.
  • West Path [Outer Room: Shrine] Drafting Funeral Parlor while cursed will cause the player to lose 1, 1, 1 and 1.
  • [Secret Item: Crown of the Blueprints] When Funeral Parlor is drawn while drafting, the Crown of the Blueprints can remove it from the draft pool, redraw floorplans, and give 1.
  • [Secret Item: Paper Crown] Drawing Funeral Parlor while drafting prevents using the Paper Crown's redraw ability.
  • [Game Mode: Dare Mode] The dare in Dare Mode to always draft a red room when drawn applies to Funeral Parlor.

One side of the room undergoes drastic cosmetic changes:

  • The couch is replaced by an open and empty funeral casket.
  • The curtains become red and are always drawn, even when the Funeral Parlor is drafted such that the windows would face outside the house.
  • There is an additional document by the casket in the form of a memorial card.

The Funeral Parlor seems to no longer contain random items.

The number of gems in the prize box is now equal to the number of Red Rooms in the house. Since this upgrade turns the Parlor itself into a Red Room, there will always be at least one gem.

  • The number of gems is determined at the time the prize box is opened, not at the time the Funeral Parlor is drafted.
  • The physical limit of gems that can appear in a box is 16. However, the full number of gems will appear in the Security inventory even if it exceeds this limit, which can give the impression of excess gems somewhere in the house which are not actually obtainable.
  • Getting just 1 as a prize is not considered a negative effect and cannot be protected against.

Opening a non-prize box is now heavily punished by a 30 penalty.

  • This is considered a negative effect and can be protected against, preventing the step loss.
  • The penalty is only ever applied on the first box opened. Even if a second Wind-up Key is used to open an empty box, no penalty is applied regardless of whether the first box opened was also empty.

Additional information

Poster found in the Workshop
  • The number of Parlors drafted and the number of Parlor Games successfully solved are both tracked on the Puzzle Records page of Mount Holly Records, found in the upper section of the Library.
  • A poster on the left wall of the Workshop shows a blueprint of a Parlor box, along with a small hint: "THE TRUE BOX DOES NOT ALWAYS CONTAIN THE PRIZE."
  • Major spoilers for Room 007: As Room 005, the Parlor contains the name of the 5-letter artwork in the Gallery within its description. The link between the Parlor and this artwork is hinted towards in the Puzzle entry of the Glossary of Terms, unlocked after drafting the Gallery for the first time.
