Rank

Each row of rooms in your house make up a rank. As you progress north, the rank increases. There are nine ranks listed on Mount Holly's official blueprint. However, among the staff, whispers of a tenth rank can often be overheard.

Ranks are a gameplay concept in Blue Prince and represent the rows of the Mount Holly Blueprint. There are nine ranks in the house, each with space for up to five rooms. The Entrance Hall is always found in the center of Rank 1, the southernmost rank, while the Antechamber is always found in the center of Rank 9.

While the player is in any room in the house, the current rank in shown in the bottom right of the screen under the name of that room as part of the current location.

When entering the house via the elevator in The Foundation, the player is considered to enter the rank that the foundation is in only once the steps are walked up to approach the elevation level of the room's doors.

Room 46 counts as a room in rank 10, being present north of rank 9.

Maximum rank

At the end of each day, the maximum rank reached today is shown among various other statistics. This is the maximum rank physically entered as opposed to the maximum rank in which a room was drafted today.

Due to a bug, the maximum rank reached can never be 2. The maximum rank remains at its initial value of 1 when Rank 2 is reached, and only increases again when a higher rank is reached, at which point it is set correctly.

Impact of rank

Various game mechanics take rank into account, often serving to make drafting more challenging as the player moves northward.

  • While drafting on the lowest rank, more common rooms are much more likely to appear than rarer rooms. As rank increases, rarer rooms gradually appear more frequently, while more common rooms gradually appear less frequently.
  • Doors north of Rank 3 have a chance of being locked and requiring a key to open. The higher the rank, the higher the chance a door will be locked. The chances of encountering a security door increase similarly with rank.

Rank also impacts the functioning of certain rooms, items, and other effects.

Rank-based drafting requirements

In general, all rooms which can only be drafted on the West Wing and/or East Wing are limited to Ranks 2 to 8, as the wings do not include corners for the sake of drafting.

  • The Garage can only be drafted on Rank 4 or higher, in addition to only being draftable on the West Wing northwards or westwards.
  • [Secret Room: Secret Garden] The Secret Garden Key can only be used to draft the Secret Garden on a door leading into Rank 3 or higher, even if a locked door is placed lower in the house using a Great Hall or similar.
  • [Very Secret Room: Room 8] Key 8 can only be used on a door leading into Rank 8.

Effects which depend on specific ranks

Effects which depend on rank in general

  • West Path [Outer Room: Shrine] With the Blessing of the General, after drafting any Red Room, if there are at least five ranks with a Red Room, the player immediately gains 5.
  • [Major Constellation: Spiral of Stars] After 11 words have been added to the Spiral of Stars, activating the spiral causes the player to gain a number of keys and a number of gems both equal to the maximum rank reached today, despite the wording of the spiral saying "for each rank reached". After 19 words have been added, activating the spiral also causes the player to lose steps equal to 3 times that number. Due to the bug with maximum rank calculation, the max rank is treated as 1 if it should be 2.
