Reservoir
Spoilers Ahead
This page contains spoilers for content related to several mid-game puzzles. View at your own discretion.
The Reservoir is a large location found underneath the estate, which is filled with water at the start of the game. It is accessible by several underground passageways, most of which become available later in the game.
Spoilers Within
This section contains spoilers for various puzzles throughout the game.
Access
The underground passages of the estate orbit the Reservoir, such that Reservoir can be accessed by almost any entry point. From the Cliffside Exit or The Foundation elevator, the Reservoir's northern edge can be accessed via the Concealed Entrance in the Basement. The Reservoir's southern edge is most easily reached by the Fountain (requiring a Basement Key) or by the Catacombs, accessible from the Tomb.
Once the south side of the Reservoir has been accessed for the first time, the minecart near the Catacombs entrance can be placed to allow better access to various parts of the map. Modifying this placement and the rotation of the rotating gear can allow a player to access either side of the Reservoir easily, provided they have access to one or more entry points.
Crossing
At the beginning of the game, a boat floats next to the dock at the south edge of the Reservoir. However, it is unreachable until the player has accessed the Pump Room and reduced the water level by 1. Once this has been completed, the player can cross the Reservoir from the south edge to the north edge, and make the same trip in reverse.
The boat will not automatically return to the south dock: if the player crosses from south to north and does not return the boat to the south dock, the boat will remain at the north dock.
The Reservoir also allows the player to access the Safehouse. This can only be achieved when the water level in the Reservoir is dropped lower, to 6 units. In one of the alcoves behind the Red Door, an inscription on the window refers to this point as "entry level". When the boat is left at the north dock prior to draining, the player can access the boat from the landing of the north edge stairs, and take the boat into a cavern previously inaccessible.
The boat washes up on a shore of white sand. The door beyond the sandy shore leads to the Safehouse.
Returning from the Safehouse does not trigger a cutscene. This is distinct from every other boat trip (north to south, south to north, and north to Safehouse).
"Full Drain"
When the Reservoir is completely drained of water, the player can access a new puzzle, which grants three Allowance Tokens and a Sanctum Key when completed.
23 locked chests are scattered on the ground, similar to those in the Treasure Trove. Chests appear in four colors: white, pink, blue, and black. Chests also appear with three symbols: a sun , a crescent moon , and two wavy lines, resembling fire . Each chest contains one memo. Memos appear in blue, red, and green. Only one is handwritten.
The memos inside each chest give hints about the contents of the other chests, as well as observations about the patterns between memos and chests. In this puzzle, like the rest of the estate, blue memos are always true, and red memos are always false, unless written by hand. This mirrors the instructions given on the notepad in Security. Green memos are more nebulous, and are conditionally true or false, based on the style of the chest they occupy.
Completion of this puzzle fulfills the fourth line of the Sanctum Key location poem in Room 46.
