A control room with state of the art surveillance equipment, inventory system, and access control via an electronic computer terminal. This room is where the estate's patrol guards kick up their feet and thank their stars they are living in modern era.
― Room Directory

Security is a room in Blue Prince. It is listed as Room 034 in the Room Directory.

Drafting requirements

Security has a unique restriction linked to its cinematic. If Security's cinematic has not yet been seen, it can only be drawn from its middle door. This means that it cannot be drafted along the edge of the estate unless it is being drafted from the center, and cannot be rotated.

[Datamined Information] Security's Dynamic Rarity is always Commonplace.

Cinematic

After drafting Security, entering through the middle door will play a cinematic if it has not been seen already. The cinematic shows Simon approaching the security monitors and inspecting them, before spotting himself in Security's own camera feed. The monitors in the cinematic have a different layout to those in the actual room and show several rooms that can't be seen in Security, such as the Commissary and the Foundation. Visions of Emerald plays during the cinematic, interrupting other tracks if necessary, and continues playing after the cinematic has ended. If the player has 0 after entering Security, they will have 1 after the cinematic ends or is skipped.

If Security is entered from a different door by drafting into it from the side, then the cinematic won't play at all that day. It is only once the cinematic has been seen that the middle-door requirement is dropped and Security can be drafted normally.

Items

Security has a small chance to contain one of the following items, either on the main line of desks or near the microwave on the other end of the room:

Documents

Blue = true, red = lies

A notepad on the desk provides a critical hint about the truthfulness of the various memos found in the estate, including two memos within Security itself.

The note, as viewed through a Magnifying Glass

Viewing the note through a Magnifying Glass reveals an additional note, correcting and clarifying the note on red memos.

The full note reads "RED MEMOS = LIES UNLESS WRITTEN BY HAND", implying that although printed red memos are always lies, handwritten red memos are true.

Security also contains a pin board with several documents:

  • A staff notice mentions the transition from paper-based payroll systems to electronic terminals and tells of the location of two of them: Security and the Laboratory. The password to access the network where payroll is managed is crossed out.
  • A memo states that the Antechamber has been 'unlocked' and that access levers are no longer required.
    • As this is a red memo, it is false; the Antechamber cannot be entered without opening an Antechamber door.
  • A second memo states that both security doors and regular locked doors are more common on higher ranks of the house.
    • As this is a blue memo, it is true.

The terminal password as viewed through a Magnifying Glass

Viewing the crossed-out password through a Magnifying Glass makes it easier to read, and reveals the password to be SWANSONG. This password is hinted by an anagram of the rooms displayed on the monitors: the initials of the rooms shown in the top two rows on the middle section spell "SWANSONG".

Entering the password into any terminal, including the Security terminal, will grant access to the terminal network. The password is not case-sensitive.

Monitors

Security has a grand total of 19 monitors that all display actual rooms, though they are mostly static images rather than video feeds. They do not need to be drafted in order to be viewed; they do not show items present in the rooms; and do not show physical changes in the room such as moved components or cosmetic upgrades. The Security's own monitor in particular can show Simon himself, though there are only a couple of predetermined positions in which he may appear. Some of the monitors even show secret rooms which are not in the initial draft pool.

Terminal

The Mt. Holly Security terminal

Security's main feature is its computer terminal, nestled in amongst the security monitors, named Mt. HOLLY SECURITY on its home screen. The terminal has two unique processes, though only the first is stated in Security's effect text. Like all house terminals, it may also be used to access the network if the correct password is entered.

View Estate Inventory

The Estate Inventory menu displays most items that are currently sitting uncollected in rooms on the estate. Whenever any item spawns, it is added to the list of Security inventory, regardless of whether or not Security has been drafted yet. Whenever an item is removed, typically by collecting it, it is removed from the inventory list.

The left side of the menu shows the number of resource items, listed as the number of fruit, gems, keys, and coins. All types of fruit are batched together, and the coin count is equal to the sum of coins in all piles. The key count does not include special keys. If there are any locked trunks on the estate, those are listed additionally under the other resource items. Open trunks are unlisted, as though they had been collected.

The right side of the menu shows special items, listed from most recently added to oldest. Special items are always listed individually as 1 [ITEM NAME], even when duplicates spawn. Not all special items can appear: several important late-game items will not appear, nor will most food items other than fruit, nor will any contraption that is still lying on the Workshop bench. Collected special items are removed starting from the top of the list in the case of duplicates.

Only items which are physically present in the estate are added. Shop items, such as unpurchased Commissary items, are not displayed. Some items will not appear until they have been revealed from a container; these items typically do not exist and are not determined until the container has been opened. Examples of such containers include:

Dig spots do not appear in the inventory, and neither do the items within as they are not determined until they are dug up.

Some items, such as those behind Great Hall doors, are still visible on Security even before they are visible in the room itself.

The Security inventory displaying a Master Key and Paper crown

The following items cannot be seen in Security's Estate Inventory, even when they are present in the estate:

All other special items can be seen, including the remaining two Microchips, the Paper Crown, Upgrade Disks, and Vault Keys, though for some it may depend on their exact location and spawning mechanism.

Shop exclusive items from the Showroom or the Armory usually can't be seen because they never physically exist in their rooms. However, it is possible to see a Master Key in the Music Room by acquiring it normally and then trading it away at the Trading Post, which adds it to the list of "major" keys that the Music Room may spawn. Master Keys that spawn this way are bugged and cannot be picked up, but can be viewed in Security regardless.

Keycard System

This screen briefly describes security doors and their functionality within the house, specifically that they usually require a Keycard to open. It also states whether the keycard system is OPERATIONAL, its default state, or OFFLINE. This screen has a submenu with two settings:

Security level
Determines the maximum number of security doors that can be encountered while drafting in the house. There are three settings:
  • Low: Expect to see only 1 or 2 security doors.
  • Medium: The default setting. No information about this setting is provided.
  • High: Expect to see 5 or 6 security doors. This setting can cause additional security doors to appear in positions where they usually cannot.
Offline mode
Determines the behavior of all security doors while they are offline. As security doors are ordinarily powered, changing this setting has no effect alone.
  • Locked: The default setting. Unpowered security doors can't be interacted with, even with a Keycard.
  • Unlocked: Unpowered security doors are automatically unlocked when interacted with.

Both settings are non-permanent and reset at the end of the day.

Main article: Doors#Keycard system

The Utility Closet contains a power switch for the keycard system that disables all security doors. While this switch is flipped, Security's keycard menu will show the system as "OFFLINE" and its offline mode takes effect. By default, that means that all doors are locked, but by toggling both settings, all security doors can be opened without a Keycard instead.

Login to Network

Like other terminals, the Security terminal may be used to access the computer network. This requires the terminal password.

From the Network Menu, several services can be accessed, including Special Orders, Remote Terminal Access, and the Glossary of Terms.

Electronic Mail cannot be accessed; attempting to do so brings up a message saying that Electronic Mail can only be accessed via the terminal in the Office.

The Security mailbox can be enabled from the admin terminal in Blackbridge Grotto, along with all other mailboxes. It contains four emails:

  • A message from Anne Babbage to Kirk Darren, asking for memo sheets for use in the Clock Tower.
  • A message from Kirk to Anne, noting the existence of an unconcealed antechamber lever in the Weight Room and suggesting its removal or concealment.
  • A message from Anne replying and agreeing to the previous message, noting the possibility of redundant secondary levers.
  • A message from Randolph Moore to Kirk asking him to stop archiving the logs of the live surveillance cameras in Security.

If the settings are altered from the default in a way that leaves Security without access, the message about the Office terminal being the only one to have access does not appear. If the settings are altered so that only Security has access, the Laboratory red memo claiming this will turn blue.

An alternate password to the terminal password may be entered in the Network menu that loads a secret system menu. This password, SWANSONGHSS, is given by the initials of the rooms displayed in the full middle section of the monitors. Like the standard terminal password, this password is not case-sensitive, though it is unique to Security and cannot be used on other terminals.

Entering the alternate password grants access to the Home Security Surveillance from a brief connection delay, which contains the Security footage menu. From this menu, several submenus can be chosen, corresponding to each year from 1987 through to 1993, though all menus except for 1987 and 1993 are empty. Starting on Day 53, a menu for 1994 is added, which is also empty. No more menus are added, even after several in-game years.

1987
This menu contains three short cinematics of Security footage in rooms from long before the events of the game.
  • 2 - 09 - 10:59 AM - LIBRARY
A figure dressed in white sits at the Library table reading one of the books while a suited figure reads another book by the shelf. The second figure approaches the first, and they pore over the second book together.
  • 2 - 09 - 12:01 PM - ENTRANCE HALL
Barely an hour after the previous cinematic, the suited figure crosses the Entrance Hall carrying a vase.
  • 2 - 10 - 4:22 PM - SECURITY
The first figure from the Library cinematic, now revealed to be Mary Jones, holds up a sheet of paper with a cryptic symbol to the Security camera.

If you've found a new clue, you know what to do.

What music plays during the Security footage cinematics?

1993
This menu allows previously seen in-game cinematics to be replayed. The times and dates are fixed and do not match the actual in-game times that the cinematics were seen. Two cinematics are always available:
  • 11 - 6 - 18:01 - PARLOR
The game's introductory cinematic.
  • 11 - X - 10:51 - SECURITY
The cinematic seen when first entering Security. This cinematic can be replayed even if it has not been seen yet.
A few more cinematics are added to this menu once they have been seen. Many cinematics can't be replayed.

Interactions

  • Ivory Dice have an unusual relationship with the Security inventory, lying somewhere between a special item and a resource item. A single die tends to appear as 1 IVORY DIE, whereas a pair may be confusingly logged as 1 IVORY DICE. Dice often fail to show at all if they have been spawned in a unique fashion.
  • Upgrade Disk [Upgrade Spoiler: Parlor] The Funeral Parlor can only spawn up to 16 prize gems, even if there are more than 16 Red Rooms on the estate at the time the prize box is opened. However, the full number of gems is added to Security's inventory, effectively adding "ghost" gem entries that are impossible to collect.
  • [Boiler Room spoilers] Security is fitted with steam ducts, allowing it to convey steam power from the Boiler Room. Since it has three doors, it can split steam power in two different directions. Security also has an increased chance to be drawn when drafting from other rooms with ducts, and has an increased chance to draw those rooms when being drafted from.

As a Mechanical Room

  • Holding the Gear Wrench allows the rarity of Security to be permanently adjusted when drafting it.
  • West Path [Outer Room: Shrine] While the Blessing of the Tinkerer from the Shrine is active, drafting Security will trigger the current experiment, if there is one.
  • Workshop [Contraption Spoiler: Powered Electromagnet] Having the Powered Electromagnet makes drawing Security more likely.
  • Found Floorplans [Found Floorplan: Mechanarium] Drafting Security will cause an additional door to spawn in the Mechanarium when the latter is drafted.
