Viewing the Spiral of Stars for the first time

The Spiral of Stars is a secret constellation in Blue Prince. Consisting of a massive 100 stars and visible only after obtaining that many, the constellation's effect is to gain new words whenever it appears.

Appearance and growth

The Spiral of Stars first appears when viewing the night sky in the Observatory with exactly 100, where it appears by itself. The constellation then appears at every star count above 100 while the other constellations from 1 to 99 repeat themselves. The constellation begins with the effect text:

Add a word to Spiral of Stars,

Every time the Spiral of Stars appears in the night sky, a new word is permanently added to the constellation's effect text, which is then revealed when the spiral is activated. New words add new effects to the Spiral of Stars' activation and can modify old ones with grammar and context changes, causing the spiral to amass many varied and in some cases extreme effects over time. Some unique effects exist in the spiral that can usually only be seen a small number of times before they are permanently altered by new words. The added words never reset, even if the spiral temporarily vanishes from the night sky due to falling below 100.

Once the Spiral of Stars has multiple effects, those effects trigger in sequence after its initial activation. Unlike other constellations, the spiral's effects can be avoided after activating it by quickly exiting from the sky view before its full current text appears. However, once the new word is added, all of its effects will trigger even if the screen is exited.

Added word timing

Although the Spiral's wording and visuals suggest that the new words are gained when it is activated, they are actually gained whenever a night sky containing the Spiral of Stars is generated. When activating a spiral, it takes into account all times the Spiral of Stars has been seen, regardless of whether it was activated on those occasions, and this can cause it to skip some unique effects which are only available during certain small windows.

Each individual spiral's wording visuals are locked at the time it is first seen, even if its effect is increased by seeing other spirals before activating it. This means that viewing many night skies with the Spiral of Stars in one day and then activating them in any order will trigger all of their effects as though they all had the maximal text, even though their actual text is still at different stages. With very precise Observatory usage, it is possible to set up multiple spirals in order to trigger some of the narrow window effects more times in one day than it is usually possible to do on a single save file.

Full text and effects

The box below contains the full text of the Spiral of Stars, broken up into sections based on the points where new effects appear or are altered. The first word in each box's title, shown in italics, marks a breakpoint where new effects begin or change, and is followed by all subsequent words which do not appear to alter the spiral's functionality by themselves. The sections can be opened to view the full Spiral of Stars effect at that stage, with additional details.

#11 - #14

The player immediately gains keys and gems equal to the maximum rank reached today. For instance, if the max rank the player has reached today is Rank 5, they gain 5 and 5. Ranks must be physically entered for them to be considered reached.

  • Reaching Rank 10 provides 10 and 10 again.
  • If the player skips ranks by entering the house through The Foundation, they still get keys and gems corresponding to the maximum rank reached.
  • Due to a bug with maximum rank, only 1 and 1 are provided if the maximum rank reached is Rank 2.

Inherited effects
  1. Gain keys and gems equal to the max rank reached today
Altered effects
The player now loses steps equal to three times the maximum rank reached today. For instance, if the max rank the player has reached is Rank 5, then the spiral will cause them to lose 15. If this causes them to fall to 0, they can still activate other constellations but the day ends shortly after leaving the sky view.
This effect appears to function identically to the keys and gems based on rank reached effect. Ranks must be physically entered for them to be considered reached.
  • Reaching Rank 10 causes the player to lose 30 again.
  • If the player skips ranks by entering the house through The Foundation, they still lose steps corresponding to the maximum rank reached.
  • Due to a bug with maximum rank, only 3 are lost if the maximum rank reached is Rank 2.

New effects
The player loses 2. Like all star-altering effects, this can't change the night sky the player is looking at, but will affect any night sky observed in the future. After this point, progressing the spiral becomes harder as the player will generally lose one star per Observatory drafted rather than gain one.
Falling below 100 does not cause the Spiral of Stars to reset.

New effects
If the player has 39 or fewer, they receive a random special item. Since Spiral of Stars effects are sequential, this condition takes into account the previous step loss.
During this brief window before the word "showroom" is added, it is possible to receive items not given by the Spiral of Stars at any other point. Possible items include:

Does it never end?

This list may be incomplete. If you find an item not on this list, you can help by adding this location to its item page.

The Wind-up Key may have a higher chance of being chosen than other items. It can be given even when one is already held, and will always be given if none of the other items are available.

Inherited effects
  1. Gain keys and gems equal to the max rank reached today
  2. Lose steps equal to three times the max rank reached today
  3. Gain coins equal to the current day
  4. Lose two stars
Altered effects
The random item the player receives is now a random "luxury" item from the Showroom. They must still have 39 or fewer to get an item; since Spiral of Stars effects are sequential, this condition takes into account the previous step loss.
Only items which are available, i.e. items which are not already owned or in Coat Check, can be given by this effect. If none of the items are available, there is no effect. The item choice logic seems to differ based on whether there is an actual Showroom on the estate:
  • If there is no Showroom, the choice doesn't seem to be actually be that random. The item given is always seems to be the first available item on the above list, except for Master Key and Moon Pendant, which are interchangeable.
  • If there is a Showroom on the estate, then one of the two items not on offer in the Showroom is given, chosen at random, if one is available. If neither is available, one of the four items for sale in the Showroom is given instead, seemingly at random. This doesn't mark the Showroom's version of the item as "sold out".
By triggering this effect enough times before purchasing Showroom items, duplicates can be obtained.
For some reason, the indicator message for this effect only seems to appear twice per day, and sometimes only once.

#57 - #62

Inherited effects
  1. Gain keys and gems equal to the max rank reached today
  2. Lose steps equal to three times the max rank reached today
  3. Gain coins equal to the current day
  4. Lose two stars
  5. If steps < 40, gain a Showroom item
New effects
If the player has 19 or fewer, then after exiting the sky view, all Antechamber doors open, including the north door. Since Spiral of Stars effects are sequential, this condition takes into account the previous step loss.
The doors are opened during a brief cutscene that occurs after exiting the sky view, similar to Antechamber levers. This cutscene still plays even if all Antechamber doors are already open, in which case there is no effect.
  • If the steps condition is met, all subsequent spiral effects wait until the cutscene begins to take effect, delaying them while remaining on the night sky view where other constellations can be activated. It is possible to activate The Slice at this stage to go above 19 while still getting to open the Antechamber doors later. This can have other strange interactions later down the spiral.
  • If the steps condition is not met, all subsequent spiral effects follow immediately, as per usual.

Inherited effects

  2. Lose steps equal to three times the max rank reached today
  3. Gain coins equal to the current day
  4. Lose two stars
  5. If steps < 40, gain a Showroom item
  6. If steps < 20, open all Antechamber doors
New effects
The player's step count is directly set to 40. This effect is independent of the previous clause and will always occur, regardless of the player's current steps. For some reason, it frequently seems to set the step count to 39 instead.
This can save the player from ending the day due to the previous step loss, making it only relevant for the conditions of the Showroom item effect and the Antechamber doors effect.

... increased and you can no longer gain

#69 - #75

Inherited effects
  1. Gain keys and gems equal to the max rank reached today
  2. Lose steps equal to three times the max rank reached today
  3. Gain coins equal to the current day
  4. Lose two stars
  5. If steps < 40, gain a Showroom item
  6. If steps < 20, open all Antechamber doors
  7. Set steps to 40
New effects
The player's luck is increased. This is a substantial boost, and possibly the largest single luck boosting effect in the game. After triggering this effect, newly drafted rooms will frequently contain two or three items, including rooms which usually require unusually high luck to find random items such as the Drawing Room and Ballroom.
Like most luck bonuses, luck from the Spiral of Stars appears to gradually decay after drafting many rooms. Triggering this effect multiple times does not seem to stack or reset the luck bonus.
[Datamined Information] This effect sets luck to 25, overriding any changes that may have occurred from a prior Maid's Chamber or Cloister of Rynna activation. These effects can still apply after the constellation, which changes luck from this base value. Other luck modifiers are applied separately from this baseline luck value, so this effect works as normal with those. See Luck#Details for more information.

  2. Lose steps equal to three times the max rank reached today
  3. Gain coins equal to the current day
  4. Lose two stars
  5. If steps < 40, gain a Showroom item
  6. If steps < 20, open all Antechamber doors
  7. Set steps to 40
  8. Gain substantial luck
New effects
The player can no longer gain steps for the rest of the day.
  • Eating food with this effect still shows a number of steps in the center of the screen, but no steps are gained. Other effects of certain food may still apply.
  • Step-setting effects are not prevented from setting steps to a higher value:
    • The spiral's own step setting effect can still increase steps to 40 on subsequent activations, although the step counter on the screen does not update until the next step change.
    • The experimental effect which sets steps to 40 still works when steps are below 40.
    • The powered Laundry Room can still increase steps by swapping them with a higher gem total.
    • Upgrade Disk [Upgrade Spoiler: Nursery] The Nurse's Station can still set steps to 20 if they are lower than 10 when entering.
  • If the Antechamber doors effect triggered during this spiral activation, the step-gain prevention does not begin until after the night sky has been exited. This means that activating The Slice while still in constellation view can still provide 3, which it cannot do if the Antechamber doors effect did not trigger as the step-gain prevention would be applied immediately. The difference is immaterial since steps are set to 40 afterwards anyway, but it helps to clarify the sequence of events deep into the spiral.
  • For some reason, this effect does not apply at 0. Entering a Bedroom or other step gaining room on 0, or eating fruit at 1 and then quickly moving into a new room before the step gain takes place, can still allow the player to gain steps even while this effect should be preventing them from doing so. This can have some surprising consequences later on in the spiral effect chain.

  8. Gain substantial luck
  9. Cannot gain steps today
New effects
The player can no longer gain gems for the rest of the day. This includes the spiral's own gem granting effect if it is activated multiple times in one day.
  • Gem-setting effects are not prevented from setting gems to a higher value:
    • The Ballroom still sets gems to 2 even if this represents an increase.
    • The Laundry Room can still increase gems with each of its gem-swapping laundry services by exchanging them with a higher resource total.
  • If the Antechamber doors effect triggered during this spiral activation, the gem-gain prevention does not begin until after the night sky has been exited. This means that activating Diamondus Minor or Major while still in constellation view can still provide gems, which it cannot do if the Antechamber doors effect did not trigger as the gem-gain prevention would be applied immediately.

  10. Cannot gain gems today
New effects
The player can no longer gain keys for the rest of the day. This includes the spiral's own key granting effect if it is activated multiple times in one day.
  • Key-setting effects are not prevented from setting keys to a higher value:
    • The Laundry Room can still increase keys with each of its key-swapping laundry services by exchanging them with a higher resource total.
  • If the Antechamber doors effect triggered during this spiral activation, the key-gain prevention does not begin until after the night sky has been exited. This means that activating Clavis, the Key while still in constellation view can still provide 1, which it cannot do if the Antechamber doors effect did not trigger as the key-gain prevention would be applied immediately.

New effects
The day ends once the player exits the night sky view and returns to the Observatory. Other constellations can still be activated, and the day's end can be delayed further by the Antechamber doors effect cutscene. If the player exits the sky view quickly while the spiral is still carrying out its effects, the step count can be seen dropping to 0, which seems to imply the end of day effect is caused by secretly removing all the player's steps without ordinarily showing it on the screen.
Ending the day this way freezes the player in place immediately upon exiting the night sky view. They may still turn, but lose the ability to interact with anything after a short time, and the "call it a day" screen that usually appears upon running out of steps appears shortly afterwards. However, it is briefly possible to interact with the Observatory telescope again to re-view the night sky. This can again delay the day's end and can have several strange consequences:
  • Activating The Slice can still provide steps despite the player being unable to gain steps today, likely since that effect does not apply when the player has 0. This can prevent the day from ending. Achieving this seems to require exiting the initial spiral effects early, in order to see the step count decrease to 0.
  • Exiting the sky view again will no longer freeze the player's movement, but the day still ends a few seconds later. During this time, if they use the telescope a third time, the constellations will be visible during the end of day summary screen.
  • While the player is able to move again, they may trigger any step-gaining entry effect, such as that of the Bedroom, to regain steps and prevent the day from ending.
The Telescope item does not inhibit the player's movement in the same way that the Observatory telescope does. If the spiral's end of day effect is initiated by a Telescope item, then exiting the spiral quickly gives the player a brief period of time in which they may take actions before they day ends.
  • Gaining steps by any means such as eating fruit, entering a Bedroom or drafting a Nursery will still work and will prevent the day from ending.
  • Another spiral can be viewed and activated by quickly accessing the Observatory telescope before the day ends. This second spiral can set steps to 40, which can also prevent the day from ending unless that spiral also has an end of day effect.
While the barrage of effects before the day's end is usually pointless at this stage, some of them may still matter for purposes such as the Moon Pendant.
