Stopwatch

The first time you find a Stopwatch each day, for the next one minute you will not lose when entering rooms, when opening doors or when drafting special rooms.
― Item description

The Stopwatch is a rare special item in Blue Prince. For one real-life minute after being picked up, it negates the losses of all steps spent to move between locations, and keys spent to unlock doors, and all gems spent to draft special floorplans.

How to obtain

This item can be found in the following locations.

Usage

The Stopwatch timer shortly after collection

After the Stopwatch has been collected, and the pick-up screen closed if applicable, a timer appears at the top of the screen that immediately begins ticking down from one minute in real-life time. The timer continues to run even while in the pause menu, blueprint menu or Room Directory, although the timer is hidden.

While the timer is running, the Stopwatch has three effects:

  • Moving into a new location does not cost steps. Although the Stopwatch's description only mentions rooms, it saves steps between any two locations, including on The Grounds.
  • Whenever a basic key is used to unlock a locked door, a key is not consumed. At least one key is still required for the option to use a key to appear, even though it isn't spent.
  • Whenever a special floorplan is drafted, its gem cost is not paid. A number of gems equal to the gem cost are still required to draft the floorplan, even though none are spent.

Any other objects or effects which spend or lose resources may still do so. For instance, keys must still be spent to open trunks and gems must still be spent to redraw floorplans with the effect of the Study. The Stopwatch never saves coins.

At the end of the one minute timer, the Stopwatch is removed from the player's inventory and the timer vanishes. The Stopwatch's self destruction does not re-add it to the item pool, meaning it cannot usually be found again in the same day. If the Stopwatch is lost during the timer, the timer vanishes immediately and the effect ends prematurely.

Interactions

There is only one timer each day, which always begins at one minute and is associated with all Stopwatches.

  • If a Stopwatch is placed in the Coat Check, it is effectively paused until it is retrieved. If it is left in the Coat Check overnight, it is reset to one minute.
  • If a Stopwatch is retained by the Moon Pendant, it starts at one minute the instant the player gains control of their character.
  • West Path [Outer Room: Trading Post] If a Stopwatch is traded away to re-add it to the item pool, and another is found in the same day, then the new Stopwatch will have the same remaining time on it as the original.
