The cornerstone of the house, unvarying and unchanging, The Foundation is one of the only constants in the estate on which you can truly rely. This natural cavity was hollowed directly out of the mountain itself, with its stone and earth walls displaying an underlying coarseness that the rest of the mansion conceals.
― Room Directory

The Foundation is a room in Blue Prince. Listed as Room 001 in the Room Directory, The Foundation is a very barren room. It has no floor, revealing the earth beneath the manor, and its walls are covered in rock. There are plenty of wooden boards in this room along its walls, and a few act as traversal between the Foundation's three doorways. There is a central pillar, and an elevator which hovers slightly off the ground.

Drafting

The Foundation has several limitations:

  • It can only be drafted in the center of the house, making its placement similar to that of 4-way rooms.
  • It cannot be drafted on the Rank 8 location directly below the Antechamber.
  • It cannot be drafted anywhere on Rank 2.

This leaves just 17 positions in which the Foundation can be drawn and placed. It is also much rarer on Rank 3 than usual.

The Foundation can generally only be drafted once, as drafting it will permanently remove the floorplan from the draft pool; see the permanence effect below.

Beyond the Estate

This section contains datamined information about rarity. It may contain spoilers for various stages of the game.

When drafting on Rank 3, there is a 90% chance that The Foundation will be removed from the draft pool for that draft.

The Foundation's Dynamic Rarity is set after reaching Rank 4 on a given day.

  • If Veteran Mode is enabled, or Room 46 has been reached, it gets set to Unusual.
  • Otherwise, if it is Day 21 or later, it gets set to Standard.
  • Otherwise, if it is Day 7 or later, it gets set to Unusual.
  • Otherwise, it remains at Rare.

As The Foundation is one of the rooms that cannot have its rarity manually changed, this dynamic rarity always matches its actual rarity.

Points of interest

The Foundation elevator, out of reach

The Foundation always contains two dig spots near the wooden walkways. It may contain up to two additional dig spots either side of the elevator.

Foundation elevator

The Foundation contains an elevator hanging above a chute that seems to lead deep underground. It is raised a few feet off the ground, initially too high to reach.

Spoilers Within

This section contains spoilers for a Foundation secret.

If a room is drafted in such a way that a door leads into the back wall of the Foundation, so that it would ordinarily cause the doorway to be boarded up, it instead reveals a secret mechanical panel. On this panel is a crank labelled "FOUNDATION" that, when interacted with, lowers the elevator to ground height over a brief cutscene. The elevator will then be permanently accessible and can be taken down to the Basement.

Permanence

The Foundation does not reset each day, similar to the Entrance Hall and Antechamber. This means that it will permanently remain in whatever position and orientation it is initially drafted in. A Foundation that exists in the house but has not yet been reached today can be drafted into like any other room, which carries the benefit of never being locked due to how drafting into existing rooms works.

Unlike other permanent rooms, Repellent can be used on The Foundation. This prevents The Foundation from reappearing the next day and returns it to the draft pool seven days later.

  • If the player continues playing for seven days and redrafts The Foundation, it will be shown in the Room Directory as having been drafted 2 times. However, on the next day, the count reverts to 1.
  • If the player closes and relaunches the game after the Foundation is removed from the house but before it is redrafted, it will appear to be removed from the Room Directory as though it were never drafted in the first place. If the room is redrafted after this, it is treated as though it has been drafted for the first time, reappearing in the Room Directory with 1 time drafted.
    • [Trophy Spoiler: Explorer's Trophy] Redrafting the Foundation this way increments the count towards the Explorer's Trophy, even though repelling the Foundation does not decrease this count. This makes it possible to acquire the trophy with rooms still missing from the Room Directory.

Interactions

  • The Foundation is never drawn while drafting under the effect of the Silver Key.
  • The Foundation does not count as a Blueprint for effects that cause Blueprints to be drawn more often. [Late-Game Quest Item: Royal Scepter] It also does not count for the Royal Scepter's "call it a day" effect, despite counting for other purposes.
  • Studio Additions [Studio Addition: The Kennel] The effect of the Kennel often does not work in this room, with doors remaining locked even after digging.

Edit this section at The Foundation/Outer.
Acquiring the Blessing of the Monk from the Shrine and calling it a day in The Foundation will allow it to be drafted as an Outer Room the next day.

The Outer version of The Foundation will appear as it does in its initial state, with the elevator raised above ground level and inaccessible, and with no way to access the elevator crank.

Due to The Foundation's permanence, an Outer Foundation will not reset at the end of the day and will then permanently occupy the Outer Room cave. The usual drafting door will be found open by default and no other Outer Rooms can be drafted. If another floorplan is "monked" during this time, then that floorplan is still removed from the draft pool despite drafting the Outer Room being impossible, meaning that the monked floorplan will be simply inaccessible for the day.

After a day or two in this state, a can of Repellent will appear in the Entrance Hall on the central table accompanied by a bemused note from Anne Babbage describing how to remove the Outer Foundation. Using Repellent on the Outer Foundation will cause it to vanish the next day and allow new Outer Rooms to be drafted. The Repellent and the letter will appear in the Entrance Hall every day until this is done, potentially serving a daily source of Repellent for players who do not mind having no functioning Outer Room.

Most of the time, drafting The Foundation as an Outer Room will also cause the actual Foundation to be removed from both the house and the draft pool the next day. If this happens, the Foundation lift also becomes permanently inaccessible as it cannot be called down. Once the Outer Foundation is repelled, the Foundation floorplan will appear in the draft pool again in one week, the same as if the main Foundation had been repelled.

If you've found a new clue, you know what to do.

Why does the Outer Foundation remove the main Foundation some of the time but not all of the time?
What determines how many days it takes Repellent to appear?

Additional information

  • Prior to Patch 1.05, the Foundation was significantly more common on Ranks 2 and 3, and it was possible to draw it less than seven days after it had been repelled.
  • A letter in the Master Bedroom addressed to Herbert Sinclair describes some of the technical details of the elevator and hints at how it may be accessed.
  • The Foundation can be glimpsed on the monitors in the Security cinematic, though not on the actual Security monitors themselves.
  • The Foundation's cavernous nature bears some similarly to underground areas of the game such as the Grounds Tunnel.
